Old Calton Cemetery

Old Calton cemetery sits on Calton Hill, Edinburgh. It opened in 1718 to provide a burial place for tradesmen and merchants. In 1767 the cemetery was extended but divided in 1818 to allow the building of Waterloo Place. The larger section which is south of Waterloo Place is home to many grand and unusual memorials. A towering obelisk erected by Thomas Hamilton (1784 - 1858) pays tribute to the political martyrs of 1793, who were 'transported' for sedition. The Emancipation Monument (1893), depicts a bronze Abraham Lincoln standing above a freed slave to commemorate the Scottish soldiers who fought in the American Civil War (1861-5).

Although my visit to this cemetery was not a paranormal investigation as such, I had to include these photos just to show you how fantastic the place looked. At night I can imagine it taking on a completely different atmosphere.
