Houghton Hillside Cemetery

Houghton Hillside Cemetery in is a cemetery with a difference. It is on a hillside, it was a disused quarry and it was met with controversy right from the start.

The Hillside Cemetery is in fact a detached, consecrated churchyard, made up of two burial grounds and is known as the old Hillside Cemetery. It belongs to the PCC of St Michael & All Angels Church and is maintained (in its neglected standard) by the City of Sunderland Council. Burials can now no longer take place at the Cemetery following a Closure Order from the Privy Council at Buckingham Palace in March 2005.

I've been there a few times and each time I've found something I missed on my previous visit.

For further, in-depth information, fascinating facts and history, you can visit the dedicated website about the cemetery - Click Here. You can also become a Friend of the Hillside Cemetery, this includes many benefits as well as contributing to the protection of the cemetery.
